Introduction
Adopting the use of e-learning and web-based educational technologies has become a necessity in any credible learning institution. Moreover, it is no longer possible for universities to use traditional methods exclusively; in fact, if a university cannot adapt at the same pace of change as its surrounding environment, the organization will fall behind, lose credibility, and disappear. Palestine Ahliya University recognizes the importance of eLearning and of attuning to the pace of development. Thus, in 2009, following the completion of a detailed needs assessment, the University established a center for this purpose.
E-Learning is not intended to completely replace traditional learning methodologies (e.g. class sessions and student attendance). Nevertheless, it aims to enhance and support the learning process through providing flexible tools which create a learning environment that allows the use of techniques that increases the involvement of students in the learning process. The establishment of the e-learning center was driven by a number of factors, including:
- The urgent need for the development and implementation of teaching and learning methods that keeps pace with technological development in education.
- A need to enhance the study environment and with a focus on the needs of learners in order to achieve the objectives of the Quality Control Unit.
- The gap between our educational system and the modern one.
Vision
To demonstrate leadership in the e-learning foray in terms of using, disseminating and realizing the necessary contributions that shape the future of teaching and learning through the use of innovative methods.
Mission
To use eLearning as a means to enhance students’ learning experience and to improve the management and support of teaching and learning. This is done by providing the opportunity to create a flexible and accessible study environment focused on the needs of our learners in compatibility with the PAU Quality Control Unit objectives and activities.
Goals
The center aims to achieve the following objectives:
- Supervision of all the eLearning activities at our University, including:
- Managing the college’s eLearning site.
- Supervision of eCourse development.
- Training staff on solving eLearning issues.
- Leading eLearning activities at local learning/education centers, (e.g. universities, colleges, schools, etc.), including:
- Installing, hosting, and supervising LMS platforms (eLearning Platform site) as well as providing training.
- Developing an eLearning strategic plan, which assesses current needs and resources, and recommends concrete and detailed actions to meet identified needs
