A Comparative Analysis Between Students’ Beliefs and Research Data on the Efficiency of Google Translator in Academic Writing

Abstract

This study aims to conduct a comparative analysis between students’ beliefs and research findings regarding the effectiveness of Google Translate in the context of academic writing. The study employed a quantitative approach, with a sample of 50 male and female students from Bethlehem University selected through a random stratified method. The primary research tool utilized in this study was a questionnaire, and the study yielded the following results: One of the prominent reasons students cited for using Google Translate was its accessibility and the fact that it is available free of charge. Additionally, students found it beneficial for looking up word and sentence meanings. However, the study found that the effectiveness of Google Translate in aca-demic writing was moderate. This was attributed to its word-by-word translation approach, leading to inaccuracies, and the presence of numerous errors in pronoun usage and sentence structure.Based on the results of the study, the researchers recommend the following actions for improving academic writing for students at Bethlehem University: Qualifying students in academic writing through instruction on how to formulate sentences according to sound grammatical rules, as part of the English language courses required by the university.
