An experimental study on the use of waste marble as replacement of aggregates and cement in construction material

Abstract

The amount of construction and demolition waste increases in every sector worldwide. Using construction and demolition wastes in concrete can achieve essential benefits in reducing the consumption of natural resources, energy, and greenhouse gas emissions. The objectives of this study are (1) to investigate the effect of using Marble Waste (MW) instead of cement (by 10%) and Natural Aggregates (NA) (by 100%) on the physical and mechanical properties of concrete (density, ultrasonic pulse velocity, dynamic elastic modulus and compressive strength); (2) to evaluate the potential environmental impact (global warming potential, acidification potential, eutrophication potential, photochemical oxidant creation potential) and energy consumption in the production of different sustainable concrete. For this purpose, three series of concrete mixes with various compositions were prepared. In the first series, conventional concrete was prepared with 100% of NA. In the second series, concrete was prepared by replacing 100% of NA (coarse, fine or both) with MW. In the third series, concrete was prepared by replacing 100% of NA (coarse, fine or both) with MW and 10% of cement with Marble Powder (MP). The results indicated that concrete made with 100% of MW (second series) performed poorly compared to conventional concrete. In contrast, the concrete mixes produced with 100% of MW and 10% of MP (third series) had a satisfactory performance. The environmental impact and energy consumption of concrete that incorporated MW were lower than that of concrete that incorporated 100% of NA. In conclusion, the results support recycling WM in concrete production to reduce its harmful environmental effects and to produce economically beneficial sustainable concrete. MW offers benefits such as reduced energy consumption and lower emissions. Based on the findings, it is recommended to use marble waste as an alternative to natural aggregates and cement in construction materials.
